Freediving surface intervals, explained
The surface interval is the single most important number a freediver controls. Why it matters, how hypoxic blackout risk builds across repeated dives, and the surface-rest models freedivers use — including the ones inDepth Apnea Blue implements on Garmin watches.
This guide explains how surface-rest models work, not how to dive. Freediving carries a real risk of hypoxic blackout and shallow-water blackout, and no algorithm removes that risk. Never dive alone, always follow the one-up one-down rule, and treat every rest recommendation as a minimum. The models described here are an aid, not medical advice.
Why the surface interval matters
Every freedive loads the body in two ways. First, the breath-hold itself: your tissues consume the oxygen you descended with, and the partial pressure of oxygen in your blood falls throughout the dive and keeps falling after you surface — the lowest point often comes after you are already back at the surface, which is why blackout can happen in the last metres of ascent or just after you break the surface. Second, depth: the pressure at depth forces nitrogen into your tissues, and that nitrogen has to come back out during the surface interval.
The surface interval is the time your body uses to clear both. Cut it too short on a single dive and you carry less oxygen into the next one; cut it short repeatedly and nitrogen accumulates across the session, so each successive dive starts from a worse baseline. That is why a surface interval is not a rest between dives — it is part of the dive.
How hypoxic blackout risk builds
Hypoxic blackout happens when the oxygen partial pressure in the brain drops below the level needed to stay conscious. Three things make it more likely during a freediving session:
- Repeated dives with short intervals. Each dive depresses the starting oxygen for the next one, so the curve gets steeper each time. The risk is cumulative, not per-dive.
- Deep dives. At depth, the higher partial pressure of oxygen keeps you conscious longer than you would be at the surface on the same lungful. The danger comes on ascent, as pressure falls and that cushion disappears — the "shallow-water blackout" window in the last 10–15 m.
- Hyperventilation before the dive. Lowering CO₂ with hyperventilation delays the urge to breathe but does not add oxygen, so the breakpoint (the urge to breathe) arrives after the danger point (low O₂). Every trained freediving course teaches not to hyperventilate; no surface-rest model makes hyperventilation safe.
A surface-rest model cannot remove any of these. What it can do is keep the repeated-dive component honest: give you a number for how long to stay at the surface so you are not relying on feel, and so the cumulative nitrogen load is being tracked somewhere other than your head.
The surface-rest models inDepth Blue implements
inDepth Apnea Blue implements six surface-rest modes. Three of them work from the dive's depth, and three work from its duration only — which matters because, as the Garmin freediving guide explains, the Connect IQ depth reading is clamped on some watches.
Duration-based models (every supported watch)
- 2× Dive Time. Rest twice the duration of the last dive. The simplest rule and the default on watches whose depth reading is clamped. All automatic modes floor at 60 seconds and have no upper cap.
- 3× Dive Time. Rest three times the duration of the last dive — a more conservative version of the same rule.
- Manual. A fixed time you choose, between 1 and 10 minutes. For when you want to run your own protocol.
Depth-based models (Fenix 5, 5 Plus and 8 only)
- Adaptive (AIDA). Twice the dive time, but at least depth ÷ 5 minutes when the dive went beyond 30 m — the AIDA recreational guideline. On watches whose depth reading is clamped at ~3 m, the "beyond 30 m" clause can never fire, so this model already produced plain 2× dive time and is not offered there.
- Taravana. A cumulative nitrogen-load model that tracks the build-up across the session and recommends longer rests as the load grows. Needs a trustworthy depth reading because the load is computed from depth and time.
- Molchanovs. A pressure (bar) × dive-time formula. The deeper the dive, the higher the pressure term and the longer the recommended rest. On a clamped ~3 m reading the pressure term is stuck near 1.3 bar, so this model also already produced plain 2× on those watches.
On the Fenix 7, Descent Mk2 and Descent Mk3 — the watches whose Connect IQ depth reading is clamped near the surface — inDepth Blue offers only the duration-based set (2×, 3× and Manual), with 2× as the default. If you previously had Adaptive, Taravana or Molchanovs stored from an earlier version, the countdown is computed as 2× and the stored choice is left untouched, so moving those settings back onto a Fenix 5 or Fenix 8 restores your original mode.
Which model should you use?
There is no single right answer, which is why the app offers a menu rather than one default. A reasonable starting point:
- New to depth, or on a clamped watch: start with 2× Dive Time. It is the simplest rule, it works everywhere, and it is the default on the Fenix 7 and Descent for a reason.
- Recreational depth diving on a Fenix 5 / 5 Plus / 8: Adaptive (AIDA) adds a depth floor for dives beyond 30 m, which is where the 2× rule on its own starts to under-rest.
- Long sessions with many bounce dives: Taravana tracks cumulative nitrogen load across the session, which a per-dive rule like 2× does not.
- Following a specific training protocol: Manual, set to the protocol's rest time.
Molchanovs' 60 m / 24-hour rule is not enforced on any watch — that one stays yours to keep.
The surface interval is a minimum, not a target
Every model here produces a minimum rest: how long to stay at the surface before the next dive is even worth considering. If you feel rushed, cold, or off, stay longer — no algorithm can feel any of those for you. The single most effective safety rule in freediving is still the one no watch can enforce: never dive alone, and keep a trained buddy on the surface watching every dive from start to recovery.
